Do you have sensitive skin? Chances are you think you do. Fifty-seven percent of women describe their skin as sensitive, according to a recent survey by Alberto-Culver Custom Research, a division of the Alberto-Culver cosmetics company.

I picked up a book on this subject and was hit with a barrage of scientific terminology like ‘Sensitive skin is a condition of subjective cutaneous hyperactivity to environmental factors.’ What it means is, when certain chemicals come in contact with the skin it creates an itching, burning, stinging or tight sensation sometimes with signs of irritation.

Over the weekend a friend of mine, recently returned from Africa, told me the best way to cure acne and heal facial sores was to kiss a Giraffe. Everyone in our group cringed.

I did some research & discovered, much to my amusement, Giraffe saliva has important antibacterial and healing qualities, and there is serious research being undertaken into the properties of griaffe mucus.

Of course, Avocado oil is the other natural source of antibacterial and healing properties for skin. Which one is better for you?

Your liver, your heart, in fact every organ of your body is under stress at one time or another. Your skin, being your largest organ, suffers stress daily yet we constantly bombard it with chemicals.

Reversing the effect of stress and age is the ‘holy grail’ of skin care.  There are many synthetic chemicals claiming to reverse skin damage. Avocado oil, however, contains the only known naturally occurring ingredient found to protect skin from aging effects and cancer by a study published in October 2010 “Archives of Dermatological Research.” According to this well regarded journal certain lipid molecules unique to avocado oil, known as polyhydroxylated fatty alcohols, were tested and found to reduce ultraviolet light damage and inflammation. Use of avocado oil prior to ultraviolet light exposure was protective and application of avocado oil to damaged skin significantly reduced cellular damage.

More importantly, the research showed avocado oil has the unique ability to reverse sun damage. Avocado Oil may be the least well known of the traditional oils, however, when it comes to skin care Avocado Oil stand out above all other oils.

There has been a lot of debate about who gets paid more, a man or a woman.

In Australia the Fair Work umpire has ruled pay discrimination is real. Over a lifetime, according to the Fair Work case, men will earn 50% more, on average, and a woman will accumulate half as much in retirement savings.

Add to this time spent raising children and the lifetime difference becomes enormous.

So what does this have to do with skincare?

Our skin is a living breathing organ and is larger in size than any other organ in the body. When skin comes into contact with anything it evaluates it and responds. Our skin is our bodies’ natural defence against millions of tiny invaders. With all the environmental challenges we have today I was wondering what I could do to keep this organ in shape.

Calendula, a common plant native to Mediterranean countries, and its extract, was carried by soldiers as their first aid kit. It was well regarded for treatment of wounds and ulcers with calendula's medicinal features often being the only thing stopping an open wound from becoming septic.

Today, of course, we have many outstanding medicines. Calendula, however, remains as the best natural skin repair ingredient.

Lavender is the one ‘essential oils’ almost always found in the ‘top 5’ for skin care, aromatherapy and therapeutic results.

There is a good reason why. It is a calming, relaxing oil, which combats stress and crisis, while its antiseptic properties help with cold, flu and other ailments. Its vapours are excellent for asthma and migraines. Apart from that it supports female health and on the skin it has a healing effect, while preventing scarring and balancing the skin and smoothing out skin tone.

Anglo Saxons believed sickness was spread as a result of poisons or toxins blowing in the wind. Songs, salt, water, and herbs were trusted means of protection from the flying venom. The Book of Shadows, a 10th century herbal, names nine sacred plants and a chant in their praise.

The nine sacred herbs shared with us mere mortals by the god Odin are traditional to Anglo Saxon lore and are used in protection against nine poisons.

In this article we look at the traditional use of the nine sacred herbs.

Chamomile dates back at least to the time of the Ancient Egyptians, when it was dedicated to their sun god for being a cure for the 'Ague' or fever.  It  is mentioned as an herb during the middle ages and is one of the ‘Nine Sacred Herbs’ of the Anglo Saxons. Chamomile is the one ingredient found in all love potions and mentioned in Greek mythology as used by the gods.

Guys just love froth and foam, yet one of the most common ingredients, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, is now being assessed in its role in infertility, breast cancer and menopause. Add this to the more common symptoms of skin irritations, tangled hair and split ends you wonder why this ingredient is still allowed to be used in virtually evey foaming product you buy on the supermarket shelf.

What natural alternatives are there?

Protection of young skin took a big step forward during the last ten years. Today sunscreens offer significantly better protection when it comes to providing protection compared to the traditional UV protection systems. This development is the introduction of micro particles of Zinc Oxide. When it comes to protecting new and sensitive skin this is now the standard in sunscreen products.
